Cooking (13yrs +)

We are launching a cooking group program focused on developing functional independence in the kitchen, a long term life skill.

The group aims to explore:
• Kitchen safety Hygiene practices
• Knife skills Measurements
• The use of a utensils and appliances Social skills
• Following multi-step procedures Team work
• Complete meal preparation Increased self-confidence

Group members will also accumulate a ‘cooking journal’ of simplified recipes supporting task break down and visual resources to encourage continued independence in the home.
We plan to run as a small group of 4 participants to ensure adequate support and supervision is provided.

Eligibility criteria:
• Existing OTFC Group clients (have completed an OTFC Assessment)
• Targeted at adolescents, 13+ years of age
• Attending/attended mainstream schooling
• Parent attendance during the session is not required

Cost involved:
• The cost of the group is $55.00 per session (10 weeks). NDIS rebate full amount
• This also includes cooking essential box 10+ utensils, apron, oven mit, scales, timer and cooking journal folder)- if purchased previously, you will not need to purchase again
• If you are not able to attend a session, the full session cost will be charged

Dance Factory Group

OTFC’s ‘Dance Factory’ group is designed to promote purposeful co-ordination as a means of enhancing individual therapy outcomes. The ability to combine the principles of Occupational Therapy and dance in OTFC’s supported and specialised environment, will assist in seeing children explore physical potential and individual creativity, all whilst having fun!

The group is therapy focused and uses a “bottom up” approach in addressing a range of developmental skills relative to therapy goals which include:
• Motor planning
• Visual perception skills
• Body awareness
• Sequencing
• Postural control
• Social skills
• Ideational praxis.

The dance and movement group will foster experiences for children of all abilities in developing dance-related skills, e.g. timing, balance, rhythm, flexibility and retention, whilst integrating children’s interests and unique talents into every class.

Run by a dancer-trained OTFC Group occupational therapist, Ms. Olivia Zoia and helped by Ms. Issie Mennillo, children will have the chance to participate in an array of dance styles such as classical, jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre.

Start Date:
• Saturdays from 9.00am, 10.00am and 11.00am (older clients)
• 45 min sessions, max 8 clients
• Term 4, 2020 commencing 17th October- 19th December 2020 (10 weeks)

Basketball Group

Purpose:
• To create a safe space for children to develop their gross motor, sequencing, bilateral motor coordination, and motor planning skills through an identified interest of basketball.
• To create a safe space for children to socialise and develop social and communication skills.
• To facilitate a transition into organised basketball/ social clubs.
• To promote and engage team building, decision making, and co-regulation.

Aim of the Group:
• 1 hour session, max 6 clients per group
• Made up of warm ups/drills
• Social skill exercise/partner activity
• Team workout/group activity
• Warm down/debrief

Start Date:
• Wednesday from 5.15pm – 6.15pm
• Term 1, 2021 commencing 3rd February – 7th April 2021 (10 weeks)
• Location TBA – sessions will be occurring at an outsourced court facility

What is Needed:
· Comfortable basketball or sports sneakers
· If you have a basketball please bring one, if not we do have spares available

Cost Involved:

• The cost of the group is $60.00 per session (NDIS rebate full amount). This price may be subject to change once location is finalised

Online Social Skills Group (Minecraft)

Purpose:
Through using Minecraft, clients will need to communicate openly to work together on;
• shared tasks
• share ideas
• knowledge and
• continue working on concepts of following instructions
• respect
• building positive relationships with one another.

How sessions will look:
• 1 hour session, max 6 per group
• 30 minutes of Minecraft as a group, doing group/teamwork games
• Transition to 30 minutes of video call sensory motor break

Aim of the group:
• To create a safe online space for clients to socialise and develop social and communication skills
• To establish an individualised screen-time agreement to support screen-time moderation
• To facilitate transitions off video games
• To promote and engage in sensory-motor activities and breaks as a group

Start Date:
• Wednesdays at 4:15pm – 5.15pm
• Term 1, 2021 commencing 3rd February – 24th March 2021 online (8 weeks).

Cost Involved:

Yoga Group

The OTFC Yoga group has been established to provide a safe space for clients of OTFC to explore gently challenging movements with an emphasis on body awareness and positive self-reflection. The group aims to bring clients together in a quiet setting to improve postural strength, coordination and motor planning. The group will also provide the opportunity for understanding the importance of breath in reducing anxiety and trialling other strategies to become more mindful in daily life. There will be time afforded to conversation to cultivate connection between participants and build a sense of belonging, supporting social skills and increase confidence.

How classes will look:
• 1 hour class, max 8 clients per group
• 45 minutes yoga, 15 minutes transitions and group connection
• Mats and props will be provided however clients are welcome to bring their own yoga mat if preferred
The aims for the group are to:
• Increase core strength, coordination, balance and motor planning
• Build self-awareness through becoming aware of responses to challenge
• Improve confidence in physical and social skills
• Develop anxiety reduction strategies for use across environments
• Establish new relationships between OTFC clients
• Increase capacity to remain still and tolerate quiet conditions
• Promote comfort in group settings
• Allow exposure to yoga and group exercise to enable independent participation in mainstream classes

Social Skills 8-10 years

This group has been designed to encourage more dynamic and organic social scenarios and interactions. These groups have been developed to build on previous social skill experiences and provide an opportunity to improve social skills and use a multisensory approach to work on a number of skills.
The term will aim to focus on the following Social Skill areas:
• Turn taking behaviour and conflict resolution
• Tackle topics such as developing friendships, using empathy, personal space, engaging in conversations
• Introduce concepts around digital safety and technology
• Emotional understanding and ability to express emotions
• Develop leadership skills, team work and collaborative skills
• Ability to regulate arousal and emotion levels
• Further physical and motor skills in a social space
• Build individual confidence in a social setting

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC space:

• Demonstrations and observations of effective social skills
• Group discussion and communication with others
• Utilising the Sensory Room space to undertake team building activities
• Exploration of simple forms of activity to support social interaction (e.g. cards, games)
• Written/verbal forms to assess and understand social skills (including quizzes and activity sheets)

The group aims to build on previous explicit and module based social skill groups and social skills learnt in other context. These groups have been developed to provide an opportunity to improve social skills and use a multisensory approach.

• Discussing Primary to High School transition
• Explore friendships in a new context
• Understanding bullying and antisocial behaviour
• Engaging in games and causal activities amongst friends
• Furthering conversational skills
• Explore issues around digital safety
• Emotional understanding and ability to express emotions
• Further team work, leadership and collaborative skills
• Ability to regulate arousal and emotion levels
• Further physical and motor skills in a social space
• Build individual confidence in a social setting

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC+ space:

• Role Playing and observation
• Group discussion and communication with others
• Utilising the Plus Park to undertake team building activities
• Exploration of simple forms of activity to support social interaction (e.g. cards, board games)
• Written/verbal forms to assess and understand social skills (including quizzes and activity sheets)

• Exploring future, plans beyond school and the ‘world’
• Discuss part time work and money management
• Friendships – existing and developing new ones in other contexts
• Social and personal independence
• Clear decision making in the face of peer pressure
• Exploring diagnoses and challenges associated with these
• Relationships, sexuality and sexual health
• Engaging in games and causal activities amongst friends
• Understanding digital safety and use of technology
• Further physical and motor skills in a social space
• Build confidence in conversations with a variety of people
• Develop team work and collaborative skills

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC+ space:

• Role Playing and observation
• Group discussion and communication with others
• Utilising the Plus Park to undertake team building activities
• Exploration of simple forms of activity to support social interaction (e.g. cards, board games)
