Social Skills (6-7yrs)

This group has been designed to introduce children to more dynamic and organic social scenarios and interactions. These groups aim to work on teaching explicit social skills and increase opportunities to improve social skills using a multisensory approach to work on the following:

The term will aim to focus on the following Social Skill areas:

  • Turn taking behaviour and conflict resolution
  • Tackle topics such as developing friendships, using empathy, personal space, engaging in conversations
  • Introduce concepts around digital safety and technology
  • Emotional understanding and ability to express emotions
  • Develop leadership skills, team-work and collaborative skills
  • Ability to regulate arousal and emotion levels
  • Further physical and motor skills in a social space
  • Build individual confidence in a social setting

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC+ space:

  • Demonstrations and observations of effective social skills
  • Group discussion and communication with others
  • Utilising the Sensory Room space to undertake team building activities
  • Exploration of simple forms of activity to support social interaction (e.g. cards, board games)
  • Written/verbal forms to assess and understand social skills (including quizzes and activity sheets)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Existing clients only (have completed an OTFC Assessment)
  • Age of the Child: group is aimed at 6-7 years
  • Attending mainstream School
  • Sensory / motor delay, ADHD, high functioning ASD, dyspraxia
  • Parent attendance during session is not required

Cost: $85 per session x 10 one-hour sessions (Rebates available)

Social Skills 8-10 years

This group has been designed to encourage more dynamic and organic social scenarios and interactions. These groups have been developed to build on previous social skill experiences and provide an opportunity to improve social skills and use a multisensory approach to work on a number of skills.

The term will aim to focus on the following Social Skill areas:

  • Introduce concepts around digital safety and technology

Social Skills 13-16 years

This group has been designed to provide relevance for an older client group. The aim is to combine informal discussion and encourage organic social scenarios and interactions. Exploring further topics pertinent to this age group.

The Term group focus on the following areas:  

  • Exploring future, plans beyond school and the ‘world’
  • Discuss part time work and money management
  • Friendships – existing and developing new ones in other contexts
  • Social and personal independence
  • Clear decision making in the face of peer pressure
  • Exploring diagnoses and challenges associated with these
  • Relationships, sexuality and sexual health
  • Engaging in games and causal activities amongst friends
  • Understanding digital safety and use of technology
  • Further physical and motor skills in a social space
  • Build confidence in conversations with a variety of people
  • Develop team-work and collaborative skills

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC+ space:

  • Role Playing and observation
  • Group discussion and communication with others
  • Utilising the Plus Park to undertake team building activities
  • Exploration of simple activities to support social interaction(cards / games)
  • Written/verbal forms to assess and understand social skills (including quizzes and activity sheets)
  • Community access, where applicable, to explore and build on covered skills

Eligibility Criteria

  • Existing clients only (have completed an OTFC Assessment)
  • Age of the Child: group is aimed at 13-16 years
  • Attending mainstream School
  • Sensory / motor delay, ADHD, high functioning ASD, dyspraxia

  • Furthering understanding of financial and job independence
  • Social and personal independence
  • Engaging in games and causal activities amongst friends
  • Exploring diagnoses and challenges associated with these

  • Understanding digital safety and use of technology
  • Further physical and motor skills in a social space
  • Build confidence in conversations with a variety of people
  • Develop team-work and collaborative skills

The areas will be explored in a number of ways within the OTFC+ space:

Dance Factory Group

OTFC’s ‘Dance Factory’ group is designed to promote purposeful co-ordination as a means of enhancing individual therapy outcomes. The ability to combine the principles of Occupational Therapy and dance in OTFC’s supported and specialised environment, will assist in seeing children explore physical potential and individual creativity, all whilst having fun!

The group is therapy focused and uses a “bottom up” approach in addressing a range of developmental skills relative to therapy goals which include:

  • Motor planning
  • Visual perception skills
  • Body awareness
  • Sequencing,
  • Postural control
  • Social skills
  • Ideational Praxis

The dance and movement group will foster experiences for children of all abilities in developing dance-related skills, e.g. timing, balance, rhythm, flexibility and retention, whilst integrating children’s interests and unique talents into every class.

Run by a dancer-trained OTFC Group occupational therapist, children will have the chance to participate in an array of dance styles such as classical, jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre. In 2020 the Dance Factory classes will be held at OTFC+ (13 Rosslyn Street, Mile End South SA 5031) and will continue to be run by OT / Dance Teacher Olivia Zoia and helped by Issie Mennill0. The classes will be capped at 8 participants

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Existing clients only (have completed an OTFC / OTFC+ Assessment)
  • Parent attendance during session is not required
  • OT from OTFC / OTFC+ endorsement required

Cost

10-week program

The cost is $30 per class x 10 classes = $300 (paid in two instalments over the course of the term)

Life Skills group

This group has been developed for those that are clients of OTFC+ and are aiming to increase their independence skills. The group combines social, emotional, functional and community-based activities to support independence and explore ongoing needs as defined by the families and members of the group. The aim is for group sessions to work on a range of key areas that will work to develop these skills.

Functional Skills include:

  • Cooking/Food Preparation
  • Community access and shopping
  • Household maintenance (e.g. cleaning, washing)
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Routines and time management
  • Money Management
  • Road Safety and Public Transport
  • Social and personal independence
  • Further physical and motor skills in a social setting

Eligibility Criteria

  • Existing clients only (have completed an OTFC Assessment)
  • Age of the Adolescent: group is aimed at 14+ years
  • Attending special school or unit, or day options program/supported workplace
  • Genetic Conditions, Moderate or Low functioning ASD,
  • Parent attendance during session is not required
